Camper Van Beethoven - What Makes You Think You’re The One
In 2002, Camper Van Beethoven covered Fleetwood Mac’s cocaine-fueled epic double album Tusk in its entirety. Their take on “What Makes You Think You’re The One” is one of my favorites.

Willie Nelson (sort of featuring Johnny Cash) - Crazy (live)
While most people know “Crazy” thanks to Patsy Cline’s soulwrenching contralto, it’s originally a Willie Nelson song, written in 1961 before he had managed to break into the charts on his own.

This performance is from the Johnny Cash / Willie Nelson VH1 storytellers concert, recorded in 1998. Sadly, Cash’s only contribution to this song is some growly yet charming banter at the end.

The Modern Lovers - I’m Straight
Without question, The Modern Lovers self-titled debut is one of my top 5 favorite records of all time. If you are a lonely, awkward nerd, this record should be your gospel. Accept Jonathan Richman into your heart as your Savior and Lord.

Hipster Image - Make Her Mine

The Hipster Image - Make Her Mine
A rather brief entry in the UK Mod scene, The Hipster Image was discovered in 1964 by Animals manager Mike Jeffries. They released just one single, “Can’t Let Her Go” which featured the infinitely better b-side “Make Her Mine”. Unrequited love has never sounded this good.

Ellie Greenwich - Maybe I Know
They Might Be Giants began their first of two encores last night with a cover of “Maybe I Know” by pop songwriter Ellie Greenwich. The song was popularized by Lesley Gore in 1964, but this version featuring Greenwich herself on vocals was released on her 1973 solo album Let It Be Written, Let It Be Sung.

Pavement - Spit On A Stranger
If you don’t love this Pavement song, we cannot be friends. I’m sorry. It’s just not going to work out.

Hank Williams - I Can’t Help It
I’m spending the rest of the afternoon listening to every single Hank Williams ever released (64 of ‘em!) in chronological order. Here’s one of my favorites from 1951, “I Can’t Help It.”

Stevie Wonder - I Was Made To Love Her

Stevie Wonder - I Was Made To Love Her
Few things consistantly blow me away like Stevie Wonder’s early Motown recordings. Wonder was only 17 when he released “I Was Made To Love Her”, a song that he co-wrote with his mother, Lula Mae Hardaway, Sylvia Moy and producer Henry Crosby. Shit, when I was 17, my biggest achievement was having perfect attendance.
